In Memoriam: Honorary Member LE Dinh Nhan

English PEN Writers in Prison Committee is very sorry to learn of the death of its Vietnamese Honorary Member, LE Dinh Nhan, who is also known by his religious name Thich HUYEN Quang.

LE Dinh Nhan was born in 1917. He was one of the most respected religious leaders of the Vietnamese Buddhists and People, and was also the author of many renowned books on Buddhism and Oriental philosophy. He came to English PEN’s attention after he was arrested for publishing an open letter criticising the government policy on freedom of speech and religious expression in 1982. Since then, he had been placed under “temple arrest” and his health deteriorated as a result of inadequate medical care. LE Dinh Nhan passed away on 5 July 2008 for organ failure of the heart, lung and kidney.

English PEN is deeply saddened at the loss of LE Dinh Nhan- a great writer, human rights defender and religious leader- and would like to send our sincere condolences to his family and friends.
