Iran: “Our Society Will Be A Free Society” – Launch of Online Petition

English PEN staff Posted by & filed under Campaigns.

In response to the brutal crackdown against journalists and writers in Iran and as part of the “Our Society Will Be A Free Society” campaign, a coalition of leading press freedom and free expression groups has launched an online petition drive calling for the release of those imprisoned.

At least 60 journalists and writers are now in prison in Iran, more than in any other country in the world.

The “Our Society Will Be A Free Society” campaign – a reference to a pledge made by Ayatollah Khomenei on the eve of the 1979 Revolution – is gathering signatures for a petition to be sent to Ayatollah Khamenei and President Ahmadinejad on March 20, the Iranian New Year.
