PEN launches Another Sky: Voices of Conscience from Around the World at the National Theatre

April 2007

English PEN and Profile Books launched Another Sky: Voices of Conscience From Around the World, edited by Lucy Popescu and Carole Seymour-Jones, at a National Theatre Platform event on Monday 2 April. Readings from the book were given by William Boyd, Jung Chang, Moris Farhi, Ronald Harwood, Michael Palin, Prunella Scales, Fiona Shaw and Timothy West.

Whilst they have met with a wide variety of fates, the writers celebrated in this book are unified in the strength of their conscience. Their resistance to censorship has led to their imprisoment, toture, exhile, or even death. Yet their writing bears witness to the resilience and good humour with which they have sustained themselves. All of them have been supported through their ordeal by English PEN, the founding centre of the world's only international fellowship of writers, and the world's oldest human rights organisation. In this collection of letters, essays and short stories, their voices are heard - many for the first time in English - and their stories are told.
