Further Success for Writers in Translation

February 26, 2009

The longlist for this year's Independent Foreign Fiction Prize has just been announced and English PEN is proud to announce that four of the titles on the list are books that have been supported by a grant from our Writers in Translation Programme. The four titles are:

My Father's Wives by Jose Eduardo Agualusa, translated by Daniel Hahn

The Armies by Evelio Rosero, translated by Anne McLean

How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone by Sasa Stanisic, translated by Anthea Bell

The Siege by Ismail Kadare, translated by David Bellos

Julian Evans, Chair of English PEN's Writers in Translation Committee, said that the inclusion of these books on the longlist was: "A satisfying confirmation of WiT's judgment in recommending these four novels, a deeply deserved bouquet for the authors, and a confirmation too of the continuing discrimination of one of our most important fiction prizes."
