2002 Prize Winner
Bill Broady won the Macmillan Silver Pen Award for Short Stories - £500 plus a silver Dupont Pen - for In This Block There Lives a Slag (Flamingo).
Presenting the award, Blake Morrison, Chair of the Panel of Judges said: "Witty, original and often hilarious, the stories range through Bradford council blocks, pubs and hospitals, to the fells. They have a rare gift for sounding naturalistic and surreal at the same time. We felt both charmed and hammered by their hard intelligence."
"It is a particular pleasure and privilege to receive an award from an organization synonymous with the most serious conception of the writers’ calling," said Broady on accepting the prize. "Most of the stories in In this Block... are set, with love and exasperation, in Bradford, and I hope that this important recognition might add impetus to the city’s current bid for the European city of culture 2008."
