Tenth anniversary of the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa

Whether I live or die is immaterial. It is enough to know that there are people who commit time, money and energy to fight this one evil among so many others predominating world wide. If they do not succeed today, they will succeed tomorrow. We must keep on striving to make the world a better place for all… each one contributing… in his or her own way.

Ken Saro-Wiwa (1941-1995)

On 10 November 1995, Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight Ogoni colleagues were executed by the Nigerian state for campaigning against the devastation of the Niger Delta by oil companies, especially Shell and Chevron. After their execution, they became known as The Ogoni 9 and the campaign to clear their name continues.

English PEN, along with twenty-seven PEN centres worldwide, is taking part in a campaign to mark the 10th anniversary of Ken Saro-Wiwa’s execution.

Remember Saro-Wiwa is a coalition of organisations and individuals initiated and co-ordinated by PLATFORM, including Amnesty International, English PEN, Human Rights Watch and Index on Censorship. They are seeking innovative and radical ideas from artists, activists and others to create a unique mobile public art initiative in London – the Living Memorial – to mark the anniversary of the executions. Please see http://www.remembersarowiwa.com/submission.htm for further information.
