Myanmar (Burma): Aung San Suu Kyi's 64th Birthday

Published: June 18, 2009

This Friday, 19 June 2009, members and friends of English PEN are invited to celebrate the 64th birthday of our Honorary Member Aung Sun Suu Kyi.

To mark the occasion, English PEN will be holding a demonstration alongside the Burmese community and the Burma Campaign UK where we will be calling for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and of all those detained in violation of their right to free expression in Burma.

The demonstration will be held between 1pm and 2pm on Friday 19 June at the Burmese Embassy, 19A Charles Street, Mayfair, London, W1J 5DX (Nearest tubes: Green Park/Hyde Park Corner)

English PEN has also been working with a coalition of campaign groups, led by the Burma Campaign UK, on a major publicity campaign to put pressure on the military junta to release Suu Kyi before the Burmese elections which have been scheduled for next year. The campaign, entitled '64 for Suu', aims to demonstrate the scale of outrage over her continued detention by encouraging people around the world to write a 64 word message that will be delivered on her birthday. Over 10,000 people, including a number of English PEN members, have already contributed to the website.

If you would like to send a 64 word message to Aung San Suu Kyi, please visit www.64forsuu.org by 19 June 2009.

We sincerely hope that many of you will lend your support to the world's only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize winner and the many others who languish in prisons across Burma.
