Dear President Castro,

I write to congratulate you and the people of Cuba on the fiftieth anniversary of the Revolution. However, as a member of PEN, the international association of writers, and as a professional [author/journalist/publisher?] who values the right to freedom of expression enjoyed here in Britain and in other democratic countries, I must also express my deep concern about the continued detention of 26 Cuban writers, journalist and librarians, 22 of which have been detained since the crackdown of March 2003.

Seven journalists whose situation continues to be of particular concern are English PEN's Honorary Members Normando Hernández González, Adolfo Fernández Saínz, Julio César Gálvez Rodriguez, Fabio Prieto Llorente, Léster Luis González Pentón, Pedro Argüelles Morán and José Luis García Paneque. All seven have been in poor health as a result of the years they have spent in prison, suffering, between them, from serious respiratory, gastrointestinal, kidney and prostate problems, as well as cataracts, arthritis and high blood pressure.

I urge that, at the very least, they are treated more humanely for the remainder of their detention, that they are provided with the necessary medical attention and granted full access to their families and lawyers. Nonetheless, I maintain that the only truly humane and just solution in these cases, and for all those detained in Cuba in violation of their right to free expression, is to release them unconditionally.
