Freedom of Expression in Moldova
2008 and 2009 were particularly difficult in Moldova regarding freedom of expression and freedom of association. Various demonstrations have been strongly restrained by the police, with brief detentions, excessive use of force, and attempts to prosecute individuals taking part in the peaceful demonstrations.
The April 2009 elections, won by the ruling party with the official count of 49.9 per cent of the vote, provoked a massive public response which tuned into violent actions. The Presidential Administration building and the National Assembly were stormed by protestors and the offices were looted. There are allegations that the violence was provoked by some plain-clothed officers.
