U Sein Hla Oo

 

(© Private)Journalist with the daily Botahtaung, well-known short story writer, and MP-elect for National League for Democracy, U Sein Hla Oo was among 240 prisoners released in Myanmar.

 

U Sein Hla Oo had been previously imprisoned from 1990 to 1992. He was again arrested on 5 August 1994 he and initially sentenced to seven years in prison, although this was later extended to 14 years.

 

On 23 August 1994, he was reported to have been formally charged with criticising the government, contacting banned opposition groups and 'fabricating' anti-government reports. He was also accused of exchanging information with a member of an armed opposition group.

 

An honorary member of English PEN, U Sein Hla Oo was released on 6 July 2005.
