Although Turkish is spelt phonetically and most of its grammar is regular, its vocabulary and structure are very different to English, which can make it a difficult language to learn. Probably the most important event in the history of the language occurred in 1928, when Atatürk launched sweeping language reforms which replaced the Arabic script with the Latin-based alphabet and eliminated many Arabic and Persian words from Turkish. The reforms happened in a mere six weeks, and the intention was to simplify the language at the same time as boosting literacy.  For more information about the Turkish language, click here
