Aung San Suu Kyi’s Birthday Celebrations

On 19 June 2009, members and friends of English PEN celebrated the 64th birthday of our Honorary Member Daw Aung Sun Suu Kyi.

To mark the occasion, English PEN held a demonstration alongside the Burmese community and the Burma Campaign UK where we called for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and of all those detained in violation of their right to free expression in Burma.

The WiPC was also delighted that PEN supporter Claire Munday organised a celebration of Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday in the local shop where she lives in Shieldaig, Scotland.  According to Claire, the most wonderful thing about the celebration was that a close relation of Aung Sun Suu Kyi regularly visits Shieldaig on holiday. Claire and others were deeply appreciative that he telephoned to thank them for thinking of Suu.
