#BooksforPrisoners Advent Calendar Day 3

The #BooksforPrisoners Advent calendar is a ‘Literary Protest’ against the misguided ban on books being sent to UK prisoners. English PEN and the Howard League for Penal Reform have been campaigning against the restrictions, which were introduced in November 2013.

Every day until Christmas, a leading writer recommends a book that they would send to a prisoner.

Today: Meg Rosoff

I recommend Staying Alive: Real Poems for Unreal Times. The editor, Neil Astley, founded Bloodaxe Books and has edited something like a thousand collections of 20th and 21st century poetry, and from his incredible knowledge, he’s chosen a selection that will make you regret the day you claimed (and who hasn’t?) that you don’t really like poetry. There are poems in here to make you laugh and cry, poems that will stop you in your tracks. Some are as powerful as a fist or as soft as a kiss. Good poems cut straight to your heart. These are good poems.
