Honduras must bring killers of journalist Juan Carlos Argeñal Medina to justice

English PEN joins PEN International in calling for the killers of TV journalist Juan Carlos Argeñal Medina to be brought to justice

Eight months after the fatal shooting of TV journalist Juan Carlos Argeñal Medina, the murder remains unsolved with little progress in the official investigation. PEN is calling on the Honduran authorities to expedite the investigation and to bring Argeñal’s killers to justice as matter of urgency, in line with a promise the Security Minister made in April 2014 and the Honduran authorities’ responsibilities under domestic and international law.

We are urging the authorities to fully investigate the apparent link between Argeñal’s reporting on corruption and his murder, as well as any links between the killings of journalists in Honduras and their political views. We are also calling on the authorities to ensure the safety of Mario Argeñal, who has been subjected to intimidation and other harassment for seeking justice for his brother.

For further background information please visit the PEN International website.

TAKE ACTION:

o Write to the Honduran authorities to urge them to:

  • Expedite the investigation into the murder of journalist Juan Carlos Argeñal Medina and to bring his killers to justice as matter of urgency, in line with both a promise made by the Security Minister on 1 April 2014 and with Honduras’ responsibilities under domestic and international law;

  • Ensure the safety of Mario Argeñal who has been subjected to intimidation and harassment for seeking justice for his brother;

Your Excellency

I am writing to you as a supporter of English PEN, the founding centre of the international association of writers, to call for justice for TV journalist Juan Carlos Argeñal Medina.

According to PEN’s information, eight months after the fatal shooting of TV journalist Juan Carlos Argeñal Medina, the murder remains unsolved with little progress in the official investigation. I join PEN in calling on the Honduran authorities to expedite the investigation and to bring Argeñal’s killers to justice as matter of urgency, in line with a promise the Security Minister made in April 2014 and the Honduran authorities’ responsibilities under domestic and international law. Furthermore, I urge the authorities to fully investigate the apparent link between Argeñal’s reporting on corruption and his murder, as well as any links between the killings of other journalists in Honduras and their political views.

I also urge the authorities to do everything possible to ensure the safety of Mario Argeñal who I understand has been subjected to intimidation and other harassment for seeking justice for his brother.

I would be most grateful if you would forward this request to President Juan Orlando Hernández, and would welcome your comments on my appeal.

Yours sincerely
