Mexico: Killing of journalist José Manuel Nava Sánchez

English PEN is alarmed by reports that another journalist in Mexico, José Manuel Nava Sánchez, has been killed, within days of the 10 November killing of Misael Tamayo Hernández.

These killings must make all Mexican journalists less able to practice their profession without fear. English PEN therefore calls on the Mexican authorities to take urgent action to investigate the killings and bring those responsible to justice.

On 16 November 2006,  the body of José Manuel Nava Sánchez was found at his apartment in Mexico City. He had apparently been stabbed to death. It has been reported that some belongings were missing, his personal computer among them.

Nava Sánchez was the editor of the newspaper Excélsior from 2002 to 2005, and its correspondent in Washington D.C. for 22 years. He launched his book entitled Excélsior, el asalto final (Excélsior: the Final Assault) on 6 November 2006, in which he referred to irregularities in the sale of the newspaper. It has been reported that the General Prosecutor of Mexico City has stated that his office is investigating the possible connection between Nava’s death and his work as a journalist.

This murder follows that of Misael Tamayo Hernández, editor and publisher of the newspaper Despertar de la Costa, who was found death on the 10 November this year, in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero state. For more information on this case, please click here

According to the Inter American Press Association these murders bring the total number of print and broadcast journalists killed this year in Mexico to six.

Please send appeals to the Mexican authorities:

  • Demanding as a matter of urgency that there be exhaustive and impartial investigations to establish the motives behind the murders of both Mexican journalists;

  • Calling upon the Mexican authorities to bring those responsible to justice;

  • Pointing out that only full, prompt and impartial investigation of all such killings, leading to the prosecution of those found guilty, can counter concern that Mexican journalists are being killed with impunity by those they criticise.
