Poems for Pussy Riot: TRICKY D.I.S.C.O by Lucy Furlong

On 13 September, English PEN launched ‘Poems for Pussy Riot‘ in support of three members of the Russian punk band – Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich – who are currently serving a two year prison sentence.

In the weeks leading up to their appeal hearing tomorrow, Monday 1 October, we have been posting daily tributes to the band, in the form of some extraordinary poems and images. We will also be publishing an ebook collection of the poems, CATECHISM: POEMS FOR PUSSY RIOT to coincide with the hearing, which will be available for download here. Several contributors to the project will also be reading their work as part of a peaceful poetry protest outside the Russian Consulate in London, 11- 1pm – one of many protests due to take place across the globe. Please do join us if you are able to – and bring a balaclava!

The next contribution comes from writer Lucy Furlong, who will be reading at tomorrow’s protest.

 TRICKY D.I.S.C.O

Ms Baubo

She trickster

dances Demeter across pulsing boards ,

mirror ball snow glints against sparkled balaclava,

a stretched red sequinned boob  tube over  laughing torso,  her

regulars stand at the bar, laugh and point, expect her usual grin

not bare-faced cheek covered with dead-pan expression, as

she spins a mourning goddess across her lit-up floor.

Hades keeps mothers in the underworld, under here

their heads push against the ceiling, engaged,

waiting for the earth to open like a womb,

to contract, push them gasping into

spring air, bloody, beautiful

un-bowed. Baubo reveals

herself to Demeter;

teases a

thaw.
