Cheltenham Literature Festival
30 November -0001—17 October 2005
The Times Cheltenham Festival of Literature October 7th – 16th 2005
in association with Ottaker’s
The Cheltenham Literature Festival sees hundreds of events taking place over 10 days with something for everyone, from discussions, to debates, to gothic storytelling. This year a series of events ask ‘what does it mean to be free?‘, sure to provoke some of the festival’s sharpest and most controversial debates. Lending their voices will be some of the most incisive cultural and political commentators, including Simon Schama, Chris Patten and Tony Benn.
The festival will also focus on Africa this year, celebrating the richness and complexity of an extraordinary continent. Cheltenham’s first guest Director, Diran Adebayo, has created an eclectic series of events featuring some of the most exciting African voices writing today.
The festival will also include four, fifteen minute readings in association with English PEN and Writers in Prison at which speakers will read from the work of a previously imprisoned writer:
Monday 10th October: Charles Nicholl
Tuesday 11th October: Gavin Hewitt
Wednesday 12th October: John Simpson
Friday 14th October: Michael Wood
