PEN Atlas presents: an evening with Samanta Schweblin and Mariana Enriquez
25 May 2017, 6:30 pm—8:00 pm£5
Samanta Schweblin and Mariana Enriquez will be in conversation with Lucy Scholes for a special PEN Atlas at Waterstones Islington – come along for a chance to hear from two of the finest authors working in the Spanish language today.
Fever Dream, recently shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize 2017, explores maternal and familial love and tensions in a ‘superlative work of the imagination.’ Heralded as ‘one of the freshest voices to come out of the Spanish language,’ Schweblin’s work establishes a heightened sense of psychological tension, deftly handling ideas of trauma, and forgetting. Highly original and deeply unsettling, Fever Dream is a haunting, modern parable.
Along with Fever Dream, Mariana Enriquez’s ‘wildly imaginative’ short stories, The Things We Lost in the Fire, are another literary landmark to have recently come out of Argentina. As ‘horror seeps subtly into everyday events,’ Enriquez’s depictions of maternity, family and marriage adopt an otherworldliness. Gothic, unnerving and yet engrossing, Enriquez’s work carries traces of Borges, whilst remaining unequivocally reminiscent of Angela Carter. These stories are fraught with violence and corruption, musing on desire, deception and the remnants of a dictatorship.
