Silence in the library! Censorship informs what we read and write – and how, as we’ll learn by reading exemplary writers from Allen Ginsberg to Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti, we can resist.

From the home to the courts, censorship informs how and what we read and write. In this course, we’ll consider the difference that space makes to literary free speech, from books being challenged in schools to writing revolution in the streets. Each seminar will look at a different space – home, street, court, library, theatre, sacred space – combining context, reading and speaking freely as we engage with manifestations of censorship from book-burning to bowdlerisation – and beyond.

This course will take place at the Free Word Centre, 60 Farringdon Road, London EC1R 3GA. Enrolment is through Bishopsgate Institute. Organised in association with English PEN and the Free Word Centre.
