‘Literature’s power is to strengthen one’s sense of of selfhood and individuality’ – John Carey
English PEN’s prison writing competition has received over 400 entries from 80 different prisons all over the UK; Perth to Port Talbot, Dartmoor to Isle of Wight.
Our judge for 2012 is the poet and novelist Mark Haddon. He chose themes to encourage the imagination in fiction and poetry, and a Books section for reader reviews. The closing date was November 17. Mark is now reading the long list, and he will choose the talented winners in each category and the runners up.
Inside Time will publish the winners in January 2013, prize money will be despatched and English PEN will publish a collection of winners and commended in 2013. We will share that news on our web site and the booklet will be available as a download.
In the meantime, why not read the winning entries from the 2011 competition?
A big thank you to all our entrants and the prison librarians, education and staff who made this year’s competition such a success.
