Read: a poem by an older person with dementia who took part in a recent PEN project

Won’t go away

Well the world into a dangerous place now
Too many violence
Not even government able to control
Because this thing
You know I have it
You know it won’t go way
What is it?
Dementia
The dementia rob all me earnings
I gave up my flat

One million people have the same complaint
They reckon
And people working in this department have it –
They come to do medication, then
Come back “Lost key”

It has no friends
It attaches anybody
I heard it on the radio
They reckon
One million people have it
And it must increase
What you call it?
Dimensions
Dementia
Life is what you make

This poem came out of a project English PEN ran with Living Words in partnership with the European Commission Representation in the United Kingdom.
