Scroggies

Sandy Hamilton

Scroggies is our name for sauté potatoes.  Coined by my mum.  Silly, daft, funny mum.  How she kept me and James amused with ‘Jeanspeak’.  Jeanspeak.  She’d have one of her heads.  We knew she wasn’t well.  She’d ask us to put the radio on.  We’d switch on the telly.

We laughed throughout years of adversity.  We had fish and shared the chips.  She walked our washing to the launderette every week in a pushchair.  Looking back, we realise just how well off we were.
