The writer and broadcaster Bidisha is running workshops in Dover Immigration Removal Centre today. Bidisha says, she’s planning to get the participants in the workshop to
talk, write, work, share, instead of listening to me. So I thought about introducing myself briefly and then setting some extremely simple reading-response and writing tasks: responding to a couple of lines of poetry, then writing our own. Finishing a sentence I begin, writing a character sketch – these are powerful and deceptively simple exercises that draw out even the most shy, unconfident or sceptical attendee. The element of reading out our own work, listening to each other supportively, is not just a confidence-booster but enjoyable with it.
