On Thursday 18 July Mark Haddon will visit HMP Frankland in Durham for a Readers & Writers event for English PEN.
HMP Frankland won the PEN prison writing competition for the most entries; 60 men sat down with pen and paper, supported by the writer in residence and the library, and sent in their prose pieces and book reviews.
Writer Mark Haddon judged this year’s competition and noted:
‘Good writing – really good writing is not something you do just for yourself but something you do for other people’.
English PEN had over 400 entries from 60 prisons in 2012 and this year we hope to have even more. Our judge will be poet and novelist Jackie Kay and we will send all information to all prisons and our partners by the end of September.
