Former PEN President Victoria Glendinning recently visited Bangladesh and learnt firsthand of the appalling attack on writer Dr Humayun Azad, which left him critically injured and his family receiving death threats.
Dr Azad was attacked on 27th February 2004 by unidentified assailants. The attack is believed to be in connection with the publication of
his recent novel Pak Sar Zamin Saad Baad, a story based on religious groups in Bangladesh who collaborated with the Pakistani army during the 1971 independence war. Victoria has written the following report, which includes a poem by Bangladeshi poet, translator and essayist Kaiser Haq responding to the outrage.
On another note, we would like to publish here a poem by Bangladeshi poet Imrul Hayes – click on the following link Poetry was like this.
