Crime writer P D James dies aged 94

English PEN is saddened to learn of the death of P D James, Baroness James of Holland Park

The crime writer, who has passed away at her Oxford home at the age of 94, enjoyed an internationally successful literary career which spanned over 50 years.

P D James’s first novel, Cover Her Face, was published in 1962 and also marked the debut of her regular detective, Adam Dalgleish. Her most recent book, the Jane Austen spin-off Death Comes to Pemberley, appeared in 2011.

P D James, who was made a life peer in 1991, was president of the Society of Authors from to 1997-2013.

In 2013 PD James generously donated her 1977 novel Death of an Expert Witness to English PEN’s First Editions, Second Thoughts auction.

Donating the book she commented: ‘this is a conventional English detective story told in a conventional mode – but I aimed to make it more’.
