English PEN appoints a new Director

English PEN has appointed a new Director, Jonathan Heawood.

Jonathan joins PEN from the Fabian Society where he has been Editorial Director since 2004 and where he has published books, pamphlets and magazine articles on topics across the political spectrum. He has also organised and chaired events ranging from small seminars to major public debates at Labour Party Conferences and has raised the funds for these publications and events from a variety of sources.

The President of English PEN, Dr Alastair Niven, OBE, said: “We are delighted that Jonathan will be joining us and we are all greatly looking forward to working with him. PEN currently has a very full agenda and Jonathan’s knowledge of the worlds of writing, politics and the media will bring considerable benefits to the organization in its campaigning work.”

Before joining the staff of the Fabian Society Jonathan worked as Deputy Literary Editor of the Observer, with responsibility for writing and commissioning book reviews, interviews and features. He now continues to contribute to magazines and newspapers including the Observer, the Independent on Sunday, Prospect, the New Statesman and the London Review of Books.
