English PEN welcomes the release of Iranian writer and intellectual Ramin Jahanbegloo

English PEN welcomes the recent release of Iranian writer and intellectual, Ramin Jahanbegloo from Evin Prison in Tehran.  After four months of confinement, Jahanbegloo was released on the morning of August 30, 2006. The Iranian academic was arrested in Tehran Airport on his way to Brussels for an international conference on Iran on April 27, 2006 but his detention was not officially confirmed until May 3rd.  At that time, unconfirmed reports circulated stating that his arrest was based on accusations of espionage, having links to monarchist and other groups and violating security measures. 

Ramin Jahanbegloo is the head of the Department of Contemporary Studies at the Cultural Research Bureau in Tehran.  He is a frequent contributor to international journals and newspapers and is the author of over 20 books in Persian, English and French on philosophy and current affairs in Iran. He received a postdoctoral degree in Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University in 1999.
