English PEN was delighted to take part in the inaugural Human Rights in Action Day at the University of Surrey, Roehampton, which took place on Wednesday 12th March. The day was a celebration of academic and campaigning work in the UK, and aimed to raise awareness of a variety of human rights issues.
The day was opened by Her Excellency Ms Lindiwe Mabuza, the High Commissioner for South Africa, who later spent time talking to students and representatives of the organisations involved. English PEN ran a stall displaying the work of the Writers in Prison Committee, which works on behalf of writers who are detained or otherwise persecuted for their opinions expressed in writing. We were extremely pleased with the interest shown in English PEN, and hope to take part in similar events in the future.
Other organisations taking part included UNESCO, Amnesty International and UNHCR.
