Second Reading of Racial and Religious Hatred Bill

MPs will vote this afternoon on the Racial and Religious Hatred Bill at its second hearing. While critics feel the legislation will curb freedom of speech and civil liberties, some ministers believe the proposed law will extend the protection currently offered to only some religious groups. A cross-party group including Liberal Democrat Evan Harris, Conservative MP Dominic Grieve and Labour lawyer Bob Marshall-Andrews are in favour of amending existing race hate laws.
