The new framework, collectively known as the 2030 Agenda, sets out 179 targets for economic, environmental and social development.
Target 16.10 is to
ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms, in accordance with national legislation and international agreements
The inclusion of this target is a victory for a campaign led by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), the global voice of the library and information profession. Its 2014 Lyon Declaration, to which English PEN is a signatory, set out the importance of access to information and called for provisions in the post-2015 sustainable development goals.
