Vice News reporter Mohammed Rasool has been released on bail after being held in a Turkish prison for 131 days.

Rasool was arrested last summer with his journalist colleagues, Philip Pendlebury and Jake Hanrahan, while reporting in south-eastern Turkey. Pendlebury and Hanrahan were released after 11 days, but Rasool was detained for more than four months, charged with ‘assisting a terrorist organisation’. English PEN welcomes his release, but calls for the charges against Rasool to be dropped.

‘Journalists in Turkey are working in hostile and dangerous conditions and press freedom is under attack,’ said Jo Glanville, director of English PEN. ‘It is essential that reporters are allowed to report on matters of public interest without facing the risk of detention, prosecution or threats to their lives.’
