The PEN Centres of England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland are deeply alarmed by the rise in violence against migrant and other marginalised communities on these islands, driven by mis- and dis-information. This is part of a wider rise of those who seek to undo our hard-won civic rights using methods which directly contravene the PEN Charter. In accordance with the Charter, we call on all members to “do their utmost to dispel all hatreds” and to “oppose such evils of a free press as mendacious publication, deliberate falsehood and distortion of facts for political and personal ends.” We are in solidarity with those targeted and with all who are affected by such violence.
