Position: Researcher and Translator – Turkish Specialist
Annual salary: £16,349 pro rata
Location: London, UK
Job Type: Six -months, fixed term; 24 hours per week

This is a specialist role for a bi-lingual speaker with a background in journalism and/or human rights and proven knowledge of the challenges to freedom of expression in Turkey. The researcher/translator will support English PEN in its advocacy.
Outline of role
- Researching and writing reports on current challenges to freedom of expression in Turkey
- Translation of source material and interviews
- Monitoring arrests, releases, trials of persecuted writers and journalists in Turkey
- Establishing and maintaining contact with lawyers and representatives of the above to obtain consent for action and monitoring of developments
- Creating a database of current cases containing relevant information
- Updating the Turkey case entries for English PEN’s 2017 case list
- Providing advice to English PEN on its advocacy strategy relating to Turkey
- Attending joint action strategy meetings and related Turkey talks and representing English PEN
- Drafting actions and press material regarding arrests, closures and more as agreed with the Writers at Risk Manager and/or Director
Essential skills
- Bi-lingual in Turkish and English; able to speak and write to a high-level of fluency and accuracy
- Relevant and substantial experience as a journalist and/or human rights advocate
- Proven ability to write and edit to a professional standard
- Proven ability to communicate effectively with partners, clients and team
- Ability to work under pressure
- Strong team worker
- In-depth knowledge of politics and current affairs in Turkey
