Tuesday 15th May at 7pm
Keats House London
This is an exciting opportunity to catch the enigmatic author of best-selling and highly-acclaimed New Finnish Grammar in London. At this event at Keats House, Diego Marani will discuss and read from his remarkable new novel, Last of the Vostyachs (trans. Judith Landry) supported by English PEN’s Writers in Translation programme.
About the Book…
As a child, Ivan is forced to work with his father as a labourer in a mine in Siberia, his father having committed some minor offence against the regime. When his father is murdered in front of his young son, Ivan – who is a Vostyach, an imaginary ethnic group of whose language he is the last remaining speaker – is struck dumb. Twenty years later, the guards desert their posts and Ivan walks free. But, drawn by some mysterious power, he makes a fated return to the region he originally came from….
‘I can’t remember when I read a more extraordinary novel, or when I was last so strongly tempted to use the word “genius” of its author.’ Nicholas Lezard The Guardian, of New Finnish Grammar.
