English PEN is delighted to be working with our sister centre PEN Uganda to support their latest initiative – creating a library for writers in exile

We are currently gathering books to donate to the Make Space project, established by our colleagues in Uganda in September 2019. The Make Space project provides writers in exile in Uganda with a space to work, read and write.

We are pleased to be partnering with PEN Uganda to create a new library for visitors and are inviting members and supporters of PEN here in the UK to donate books.

Danson Kahyana, President of PEN Uganda, said:

We are depending on members of the pioneering and parent PEN centre to deliver hundreds of books to the displaced writers – and Ugandan writers as well, for they are also welcome to use the centre.

With your donation, I see the centre’s fortunes changing for [the] better.

Daniel Gorman, Director of English PEN, said:

The ‘Make Space’ project from PEN Uganda to create a library for writers in exile embodies the PEN Charter aim for literature to ‘remain a common currency between nations in spite of political or international upheavals’. English PEN is delighted to be able to collaborate on this through the provision of donated books from our members and partners across England.
