English PEN is pleased to announce the shortlist for this year’s PEN/Hessell-Tiltman Prize for history. The prize is awarded annually for a book of specifically historical content not primarily written for the academic market. The six shortlisted titles are:

Britain’s War Machine by David Edgerton (Allen Lane)
The Information by James Gleick (Fourth Estate)
An Empire of Ice by Edward J Larson (Yale)
To End All Wars by Adam Hochschild (Macmillan)
The winner will be announced at a special prize-giving ceremony at the English PEN Literary Cafe at this year’s London Book Fair on Tuesday 17 April.
