UPDATE (17/9/19): We are deeply disappointed that award-winning human rights defender Nabeel Rajab will remain in detention following today’s refusal to grant him a non-custodial or suspended sentence.
Join English PEN, Index on Censorship, Reporters Without Borders for a vigil in front of the Bahrain Embassy in London for human rights defender Nabeel Rajab.
Monday 16 September, 5-6 pm
Bahrain Embassy, 30 Belgrave Square, London, SW1X 8QB
Nabeel Rajab has been arbitrarily detained since June 2016 for expressing his opinions. His case has been raised repeatedly by the international community. In 2018, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention called for Nabeel’s release and said the convictions were unlawful and violated his freedom of expression. A hearing requesting that the Bahrain Court overturn previous decisions to uphold Nabeel’s sentence will take place on 17 September 2019.
English PEN and Index on Censorship have also joined fellow human rights organisations in writing to the Minister of Information Affairs Ali bin Mohammed Al-Rumaih urging him to suspend the sentence.
We will be at the Bahrain Embassy asking for his sentence to be immediately suspended. Please join us to show your support for Nabeel Rajab.
