English PEN’s flagship grant programme PEN Translates awards 12 titles from 11 regions and 10 languages including, for the first time, titles from Montenegro and Switzerland.
Books from 11 regions and 10 languages have won English PEN’s flagship translation awards. The awards include novels, short story collections, poetry, non-fiction and autofiction, and – for the first time – titles from Montenegro and Switzerland. They go to books from 11 different publishers.

Tongueless by Yee-Wa Lau (Hong Kong), translated from the Cantonese by Jennifer Feeley (Serpent’s Tail).
Why Did You Come Back Every Summer? by Belén López Peiró (Argentina), translated from the Spanish by Maureen Shaughnessy (Charco Press).
Anomaly by Andrej Nikolaidis (Montenegro), translated from the Montenegrin by Will Firth (Peirene Press).
Holy Winter by Maria Stepanova (Germany), translated from the Russian by Sasha Dugdale (Bloodaxe Books).
Purity by Andrzej Tichý (Sweden), translated from the Swedish by Nichola Smalley (And Other Stories).
Rocket by Loranne Vella (Belgium), translated from the Maltese by Kat Storace (Praspar Press).
A Programme of Absolute Disorder: Decolonising the Museum by Françoise Vergès (Reunion), translated from the French by Melissa Thackway (Pluto Press).
PEN Translates has now supported over 350 books translated from over 90 languages, awarding over £1.1m in grants. Tomb of Sand by Geetanjali Shree, translated from the Hindi by Daisy Rockwell, a PEN Translates-supported title, won the 2022 International Booker Prize. 17 other PEN Translates books have appeared on International Booker Prize longlists. This month, the PEN Translates winner Strega by Johanne Lykke Holm, translated from the Swedish by Saskia Vogel, won the Bernard Shaw Prize. Five of the ten books longlisted for the 2024 Republic of Consciousness Prize are PEN Translates titles.

Books are selected for PEN Translates awards on the basis of outstanding literary quality, the strength of the publishing project, and their contribution to UK bibliodiversity.
